South Newman Primary school were very keen to transform an outdoor space into a nature playground, and engaged Nature Based Play to complete a design for them. The location presented some challenges such as dry hard flat ground, potential termites, and the remote location.
The NBP team travelled up to Newman to build the new playground for some very excited kids. A tangled nest of logs, ground logs and rocks were installed for climbing and balancing opportunities. The ‘little river’ water play area features a carved timber trough leading into a rocky creek bed and sandpit.
Sensory elements include a log drum, sensory totems and mushroom bells.
A carved snake head with a moveable body made from heavy wharf rope is a fun physical challenge.
The resulting open ended play environment supports creative thinking, problem solving, social competency and fun.
