GRACETOWN COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND

Located on Wadandi Country, NBP met with Josh from Koomal Dreaming to learn some cultural insight into the history of the area. The design aims to incorporate elements that reflect both the surrounding natural environment, and the history of the traditional owners.
Seafood was a key resource of this area. Deep limestone channels just offshore from Gracetown were historically known fishing locations.
The limestone ridge and adjacent stone path running through the project are a reference to these offshore channels. The “Spear Steppers” were developed by NBP specifically for this project, and are based upon descriptions from Josh of how traditional Wadandi spears were made. The midden, in the centre of the sitting circle, and the concrete around the spear steppers is embedded with shells continuing this theme.
The central humpback climber within the play space serves as a tribute to the whales who seasonally migrate along the coast, visible from the site.
The project was developed in collaboration with the community; the local working group planting native Melaleuca lanceolata trees within the play area. These trees will grow to provide shade, and to promote local biodiversity.
The project was officially opened in May 2025, with Koomal Dreaming, Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the local community attending. Signage has been installed to share cultural knowledge and stories about this special place.
