KENSINGTON SECONDARY SCHOOL
ACCESSIBLE NATURE PLAY

Kensington Secondary School is dedicated to supporting children with exceptional needs, preparing them for life beyond school. The school engaged NBP in consultation with occupational therapist Cath Fitzhardinge to create an inclusive outdoor space designed for children with a diverse range of physical and cognitive abilities.
The school had a number of requests for play features to provide physical challenge, sensory engagement or quiet spaces to reset or take time out.
Based on this information, a number of tailor-made play items were designed with these requests in mind.
A rock mound water play feature incorporates carved timber channels, inviting children to explore different textures. Water play not only promotes interactive play but also helps reduce anxiety, fostering self-regulation in a calming environment. An accessible path runs alongside, ensuring that children using mobility devices can access the water play area.
The design incorporates thick ropes, encouraging activities like balancing, hanging, and swinging. Rope “tentacles” of varying thickness and weight provide opportunities for lifting, pulling, and manipulating, engaging multiple muscle groups while introducing kids to challenges of different heights.
Twin twirl bars offer imaginative play opportunity and skill-building through climbing, flipping, or simply sitting to observe others.
A vertical hollow log offers a secluded space for children to explore the sensation and texture of natural timber, providing a hideout for moments of quiet retreat.
