NANNUP “WEITJ PARK”
NATURE PLAYGROUND

Client: Shire of Nannup
Location: Marinko Tomas Park, Nannup
Date: Aug, 2021
Outcome: Nature Playground

NBP was approached by the Shire of Nannup to help upgrade the playground space at Marinko Tomas Park in Nannup. Working with the Shire and Cultural custodian Josh from Koomal Dreaming, a collaborative design was created that was connected to the Emu (Weitj) – a significant animal for the region.

Located within an area of the park shaded by large trees, the design includes nature play elements based on the life stages of the Emu such as Emu nest and Emu foot to create a range of sensory, exploring, climbing and balancing challenges. The natural setting was reflected in the nature play elements, integrated to create a beautiful nature-based playground that utilised local natural materials and timbers in the construction.

Construction was completed with the collaborative input of Shire of Nannup workers, timbers and equipment, along with the local prison workers, who were involved in timber and landscaping work. Timber artistry was done by Shire member Heath, who leads the ongoing maintenance and care of the project. Community members and local school children assisted with mulching.
Together with NBP, the collaborative team were able to complete the whole play space, and provide a wonderful, local made, nature playground.

Nature Based Play believes that, especially in the context of Nature Play, there is much to be gained from pursuing a deeper understanding of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of First Nations peoples.

Our offices and workshop are located on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, though our work takes us all across the State. As such we would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work throughout Western Australia.
