SEVENOAKS SENIOR COLLEGE YARNING CIRCLE

As part of its commitment to a culturally responsive and inclusive environment, Sevenoaks Senior College partnered with NBP to design and construct a yarning circle in celebration of NAIDOC Week. The space reflects the College’s values of respect, diversity, and community connection, creating a place for storytelling, reflection, and learning.
The yarning circle features a central stone fireplace with a fire pit, surrounded by curved timber decking and retaining wall that embraces the space. Framing timber posts—soon to be painted or etched by students—will add an additional cultural layer. Accessible pathways connect the circle from three entry points, ensuring it is open to all. The landscape is completed with extensive native plantings, including eucalypts, shrubs and grass trees, grounding the space in local ecology and heritage.
The Yarning Circle was officially opened on 16 Sep 2025, with student performances and a smoking ceremony. The school announced: “the space will be used for Yarning, a place of reflection, and a place of learning to enhance the First Nation’s stories of the families and of the significant Elders who have supported us so much with their knowledge of the past.”
