NANNUP FAMILY COLLECTIVE INC PLAY SPACE

The Shire of Nannup, in collaboration with the Nannup Family Collective Inc, engaged NBP to design a nature-based playground for the historically significant site of the Old Kindy Building.

Given the town’s relative isolation, the project prioritised the creation of a dedicated early childhood play space that encourages children’s exploration, social interaction and connection to the natural environment. The design offers an abundance of play opportunities, including a basket swing, mini monkey bars, balancing logs, steppers and stump fort with slide.

A shaded sandpit incorporates a mud kitchen framed by a carved top log and water play flowing over locally sourced granite rock, creating a wealth of sensory exploration for little hands.

A dedicated cubby building area with loose sticks supports creativity, cooperation, and risk assessment through open-ended play.

This project was made possible by direct contributions of materials by the Shire of Nannup, as well as grant assistance from the WA Government Native Forestry Transition, Community Small Grant Fund, Talison Lithium Pty Ltd and Lotterywest.

Nature Based Play believes that, especially in the context of Nature Play, there is much to be gained from pursuing a deeper understanding of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of First Nations peoples.

Our offices and workshop are located on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, though our work takes us all across the State. As such we would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work throughout Western Australia.
