ATWELL PS YARNING CIRCLE

NBP worked with Atwell PS to bring their vision for a Yarning Circle within the school to life. In consultation with Ash and Kelly Collard, as well as the school AIEO and community, the project incorporates the 6 Noongar seasons, showcased in symbolic carvings on surrounding totem poles. Featuring coloured marbles and carvings of motives and significant seasonal flora for each season, such as grass tree (Djilba), kangaroo paw (Kambarang) and nuytsia (Birak).
A fire pit sits centrally within the circle, which can be used for ceremonial purposes. Flat top logs surround the space, with enough room to accommodate a full class of students for outdoor learning. Playable items are incorporated, such as steppers and balance logs, with native banksias and eucalypts completing the space.
“We absolutely love our new Yarning Circle — it has been so well received by the community. It beautifully reflects everything we discussed during consultation and looks both professional and inviting.”
