SOUTHLAKE PS NATURE PLAYGROUND

Nature Based Play was engaged through South Lake PS and PROGRAMMED FM to design a new nature playground at the front of the school. The project includes a new native garden with a crushed stone path winding around new plantings, the existing yarning circle and the existing timber shade sail posts. The timber posts were painted by Yamaji Artist Nerolie Bynder.

The playground itself flows like a creek from a rock mound at one end, to a large timber giant with carved climbing notches at the other. The space also includes a stage/crossing bridge and a stick hut.

Principal Leigh Liley has already given positive feedback to NBP, describing some of the pathways children have found through the new space, and games based in the new environment which they have created for themselves.

Nature Based Play believes that, especially in the context of Nature Play, there is much to be gained from pursuing a deeper understanding of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of First Nations peoples.

Our offices and workshop are located on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar, though our work takes us all across the State. As such we would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work throughout Western Australia.
