DJILJIT MIA COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE
DUNSBOROUGH

Client:              Dunsborough Progress Association
Location:         Hannah Lane, Dunsborough, WA
Dates:              March, 2020
Outcome:        Community Nature Playground

The Djiljit Mia Community Gathering Place was an exciting and truly collaborative project with the Dunsborough Progress Association and local community. The concept design was completed with the local community and Wadandi custodian Josh “Koomal” Whiteland through an onsite workshop, resulting in an original design that reflected the local cultural stories and the community needs.

Assisting and supporting the local community of enthusiastic and skilled volunteers, the NBP team was able to help create a beautiful and meaningful nature-based Community Gathering Place.

Nature Play elements include a rope serpent, log balance and rope sway bridge, water and sand play, vestibular swing, cubby climber and loose parts for cubby building. Beautiful carvings can be found in the timbers depicting the cultural history of the area Djiljit Mia, meaning ‘fish home’.

All ages will love this space, with interpretive story boards, sculptures and plenty of seating under the shady peppermint trees adjacent to Dugalup Brook.

Djiljit Mia is a unique community led project that the locals can truly be proud of and has since won several awards.

Thanks to Terry Farrell and his team from Nature Based Play. This is a company that shared our vision and is truly committed to working with grassroots community led collaborations.
They are the most lovely bunch of guys and beautiful design and construction as you would agree.
They really saw and shared what we were about.

Nature Based Play believes that, especially in the context of Nature Play, there is much to be gained from pursuing a deeper understanding of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of First Nations peoples.
