Client: City of Cockburn
Location: Baker Square, cnr Mortlock st and Weavell st, Hamilton Hill 6163
Dates: April 2020
Outcome: Public Park Nature Playground

The City of Cockburn approached Nature Based Play to design and install a Nature Playground for their public park, after strong community requests for the council to upgrade and enhance the existing playground area with well designed and built nature play elements.

Within the original sandpit site, the existing traditional play equipment was removed and the cohesive nature play items integrated into the site. This included natural limestone rocks and timber logs with water play, active play such as double swing and slide, and balancing logs and rope play. It also included a themed mud kitchen and carved top logs for sensory play.

The result was a nature playground that created an aesthetically pleasing space, blending well with existing mature trees and sandpit, and providing a range of nature play elements for the local community to experience and enjoy.

Nature Play Elements:

WaterPlay: Carved Water Rocks Feature with push button water, Carved Top Logs and Stump
Climbing: Large stump with small slide
Active Play: Double Tree Swing
Balancing & Sitting: Small Balancing Nest, limestone rocks, vine seats
Rope Play: Rope Sway Bridge

Nature Based Play believes that, especially in the context of Nature Play, there is much to be gained from pursuing a deeper understanding of the cultural, spiritual and educational practices of First Nations peoples.
